At its Autonomous Driving Campus in Unterschleißheim outside of Munich, the BMW Group is concentrating all its resources for driver assistance systems and autonomous driving at one location.

More speed. More connection. More autonomy. More responsibility: The parameters for experts at the BMW Group Autonomous Driving Campus are the same as for the object of their research. Since September 2017, the roughly 1,300 specialists working here have employed agile methods that are just as ground-breaking as autonomous driving itself.
»At the Campus, we are undergoing the most comprehensive change in organisational and working models BMW has ever seen«, according to Florian Homm, a methodology expert at the BMW Group. Instead of working in hierarchies and departments separated by functions, developers are organised in small cross-functional teams with responsibility for developing all customer functions in »sprint cycles«, based on a shared backlog.

As a result, the organisation is constantly learning – at record speed. Speed is key to mastering highly complex challenges like artificial intelligence.
The Campus is organised so that developers are in permanent contact with one other and the outcome of their work can be implemented seamlessly. All resources that are working on the topics of driving assistance systems and highly or fully automated driving have been brought together here at one location.
Highly automated driving: from 2021, the BMW Group will offer with the iNEXT the first vehicle with a secure level 3 function on highways.

»We are bringing our development directly to the road,« says AI and machine-learning expert André Roskopf. When the developer looks up from his desk, he sees a hall full of vehicles waiting to go on test runs. When the drivers come back, he can compare notes with them right away, discuss specific test situations or accompany them personally on their next test drive.
The process of evaluating this data – the most valuable resource for autonomous mobility – is just as intense. Each test vehicle’s sensors gather many terabytes of data for fully-automated driving every working day. This is then processed at the data centre on campus. Using artificial intelligence, vehicle functions developed by André Roskopf and his colleagues can make increasingly informed driving decisions based on the data collected. At the AD Campus, you can practically see autonomous driving gathering momentum at the BMW Group.
